Checking a Passage Against Its Source

Start with the citation attached to the passage. Locate the source through a library catalogue, an archive finding aid, or the repository named in the reference. Read the pages around the claim, not only the line quoted. Then ask three questions: does the source say this, does it say it about this soldier or unit, and is a second source needed before the reading holds.

Keeping a Correction Note

A useful note is short and inspectable. Record the page title or slug, the passage as published, the source you checked, and what the source states. Describe the discrepancy in one or two sentences. Write the date you made the check. Keep one note per issue. If you revisit the source later, add a dated line rather than rewriting the earlier one.

Why Notes Stay Local

Muster & Margin does not claim a submission mechanism here. The value of a correction note is that it makes your own reasoning durable and easy to recheck. That trail is the same habit the publication asks of itself.
